Oakland Christian Church’s 2007 pie sale provided over
$7,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Suffolk
Chapter Relay-for-Life.
Oakland Christian Church has participated in the American
Cancer Society’s Relay-for-Life since it began in
Suffolk in 1995. In the 10 years since, Oakland Christian
Church Relay-for-Life teams have raised and contributed
$77,000 to that event for the larger goal of eradicating
cancer.
In 1997, Oakland Christian Church member Kim Eby lost her
sister, Mona Eby Jarvis, to cancer after a long and
courageous fight. In honor of her sister, the following
year Kim began our annual East Pie Sale, to benefit the
Suffolk Chapter of the American Cancer Society’s
Relay-for-Life. Since Kim began it in 1998, the Oakland
Christian Church Easter Pie Bake alone has been
responsible for more than $26,000 of our total
contribution over the years.
Oakland members, friends and Sunday School classes give
monetary and supply donations to offset the majority of
expenses and serve as bakers, delivers, mixers, graters,
juicers, box folders, etc. to make this a success. We are
grateful to our Chuckatuck Firemen for allowing us to use
their new facility in conjunction with our church. We
think of loved ones that are gone, and loved ones with us
fighting cancer with so much hope and courage. We give of
our ourselves to honor them through the Relay-for-Life
event.
Thank you again for your support!
